Public parks are often the “engine” that propels tourism in many communities. They provide excellent economic, aesthetic, environmental, recreational, and socio-cultural opportunities – making them a valuable financial investment in a tourist destination.
In light of this, the AIM-ALT Center for Tourism and the National Parks Development Committee (NDPC) conducted the Center’s 3rd Public Presentation entitled A Strategic Framework for Park Tourism: The Rizal Park Model, last August 30.
NPDC Executive Director, Juliet H. Villegas, PhD provided an update on the progress and achievements of the country’s premier national park. The forum hoped to stimulate an increased appreciation of parks as national assets with the end goal of supporting tourism and planning officers in managing their local parks. Dr. Villegas also unveiled plans for the park, and how it can be used as a model for other national and local parks.
Incoming ALT Center for Tourism Executive Director Gulliver Go delivered the opening remarks. He said, “Over the recent years, Rizal Park has been transformed into a world-class urban park through the dedicated leadership of Dr. Villegas. As one of the most revered iconic symbols of the Philippines, it is an important conservation model that could be applied to other national parks and is a model for best practice.”
It was attended and well-received by tourism stakeholders, government representatives, and members of the academe, among many others. The forum also doubled as a send-off for Dr. Villegas as she is retiring from her role as NPDC executive director.
