Raising Travel and Tourism Competitiveness in the PH Towards ASEAN Integration 2015

Over recent decades, the travel and tourism (T&T) sector has increasingly become an important driver of economic prosperity and social progress. It stimulates growth through jobs and enterprise creation, and provides significant foreign exchange revenues for many countries. The sector generates opportunities for reducing poverty and inequality, preserving natural and cultural heritage, and upgrading infrastructure (Brende, 2012).

In order to assess the obstacles and drivers of the T&T development in the Philippines, and how it will shape the region's future to connectivity, the AIM Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism will be conducting a lecture forum entitled "Raising travel and tourism competitiveness in the Philippines towards ASEAN integration 2015".

By 2015, ASEAN Member States (AMS) aim to establish the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), a security, economic, and socio-cultural community of over 600 million individuals, which will account for nearly 5 percent of world GDP. ASEAN leaders have long recognized the vital role T&T can play in realizing their ambitions (Brende, 2012).

Some topics to be discussed address these questions:

  1. How does a creation of single regional economic community impact tourism in the Philippines?
  2. How does the cooperative regional effort increase visitation to more than one ASEAN country thereby adding value to the local National Tourism Organizations (NTOs)?
  3. How does Philippine NTOs work effectively to promote travel within the region under the theme "ASEAN for ASEAN"?
  4. How ready is the Philippine tourism industry for the ASEAN tourism integration?

Registration is free and open to the public. Due to limited seats, please register now.
