TOURISM WATCH: A Monitoring System for Philippine Tourism Development

The Asian Institute of Management-Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism (AIM-ALT CFT) together with the University of the Philippines-Asian Institute of Tourism (UP-AIT), conducted a focus group discussion entitled, "TOURISM WATCH: A Monitoring System for Philippine Tourism Development" last 16 November 2016 at the First Philippine Holding Caseroom, Asian Institute of Management.


The focus group discussion is conducted as part of the research venture between UP-AIT and ALT-CFT on the Philippine tourism industry. The discussion aimed to identify the trends and developments in the Philippine tourism industry that needs monitoring. It was attended by participants from different sectors of the industry, namely travel agencies, tourism coordinators and officers, members of the academe, and representatives of the hotel and restaurant sector, among others. The following distinguished guests were present at the event:  Erwin Valenzuela, Vice President for Luzon of Philippine Federation of Tour Guide Associations, Inc., Mr. Paul So, Executive Vice President of Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), Mr. Daniel Edralin, Secretary General of National Union of Workers in Hotels, Restaurants, and Allied Industries, Dr. Wilfred Manuela, Jr. of the Asian Institute of Management, Mr. Dante Navarro, Executive Vice President of Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines, Ms. Rosanna Tuason Fores, President of Tourism Congress of the Philippines, Ms. Maria Luisa Mascardo, OIC – Plans & Programs Division of Manila International Airport Authority, Mr. Alvin Lim, Director of Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines, Ms. Mariglo Laririt, Director for Environmental Sustainability of El Nido Resorts, Ms. Monette Hamlin, Chairman of Philippine Association of Convention, Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers, Inc., Ms. Keesha Buted, Consultant of Asia Pacific Projects, Inc., Ms. Evelyn Francisco, Business Development Manager of Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, Mr. Hernando Enal, Manager – Monitoring & Evaluation Division of Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, Mr. Ramil Basuel   Senior Tourism Operations Officer of Department of Tourism, Ms. Marivic Sevilla, Corporate Planning and Business Development of Tourism Promotions Board, Ms. Amelia Menardo Chief Economic Development Specialist of National Economic Development Authority, Atty. Kim Baltao, Legal Officer of Tourism Congress of the Philippines, Mr. Cesar Cruz, President of Philippine Tour Operators Association, Inc., and Asst. Prof. Reil Cruz of UP-Asian Institute of Tourism.


Dean Miguela M. Mena of UP-AIT welcomed the participants and provided some insights and observations on the recent developments on the industry. This was followed by the brief discussion on the project description by Dr. John Paolo Rivera of the AIM-ALT CFT.


The discussions with the participants were moderated by Asst. Prof. Gladys Nocon of UP-AIT. Each of the participants shared their expertise and insights regarding the topics on the contemporary issues facing tourism and the key tourism stakeholders in achieving sustainable tourism. The focal points of the discussions include the gaps in tourism research, constraints in data collection, and other sector and organization-specific concerns.

After a day of insightful discussions, the conference was closed by Prof. Fernando Martin Y. Roxas, the Executive Director of AIM-ALT CFT.
