Ecotourism as a Triple Bottomline Strategy for ASEAN

ALT-CFT Case Study:
ECOTOURISM AS A TRIPLE BOTTOMLINE STRATEGY FOR ASEAN (A CASE STUDY ON REGIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION)
NARAYANAN, Nandini

The case builds on the achievements of the Silonay Ecotourism Project, and looks at the possibility of expanding the strategy elsewhere in the ASEAN region. Ecotourism is a tool for climate change adaptation, and is a possible strategy for ASEAN to adopt in time for the economic integration in 2015. Tourism is one of ASEAN’s focus industries, and climate change is an urgent and pressing problem in the world today. As the leaders of ASEAN focus on working together, ecotourism has a lot of potential in this naturally blessed region. The case, therefore, looks at various aspects of the proposal of replicating the eco-tourism model: coopetition among competitors, cooperation between various stakeholders, an analysis of the existing demand, the revenue model of ecotourism, the readiness of ASEAN for rapid growth in the tourism sector, the advantages of public-private partnerships (PPP) in an ecotourism project, and finally, effective marketing of the very concept of ecotourism.
