ALT-CFT Case Study:
SILONAY: AN EXPERIMENT IN ECOTOURISM (A CASE STUDY ON CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION)
The case looks at the ecotourism industry that is being built in Silonay from the point of view of Bobby Vergara (a.k.a. Captain Bobby), the barangay captain, and Governor Alfonso V. Umali, the provincial governor. The issues at stake are the physical safety of the island Silonay, the well-being of the community residing there, and the ecology of the area. The case looks at how eco-tourism can offer an operational solution through community empowerment, climate change adaptation and revenue making that can benefit Silonay as a whole. Ecotourism in Silonay also includes educating the visitors about the effects of climate change, which can have a positive spillover effect, and instances of downstream employment. The background to the case is the phenomenon of climate change. Silonay is facing devastating consequences due to climate change such as rising sea levels, ocean acidification, etc. In this context, the project is an attempt to apply business concepts to save the Silonay community and ecology.
